Al-Waqi'ah 56:80

تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

“[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Book is named after the way it arrived, and the name of its Sender means the Lord of everything He is known by.

A reflection

Lord of the worlds means Lord of all He is known by

Walk round an old parish and you can read a mason who signed nothing. The same way of setting a quoin, the same chamfer on a doorway, a particular lazy curve on the second window of every porch. He left no name anywhere. The buildings are the whole record of him.

The second half of this ayah uses a word built on that idea, and it is one of the quietest shocks in the Book.

The word worlds comes from the root for knowing. The lexicons list the senses in order. Knowing a thing. Then a sign or landmark, which is what points the way to something. Then teaching. And then the worlds, which are described as all that the Maker is known by.

So the worlds are not a list of realms. They are the evidence.

Which means that Lord of the worlds says something more specific than Lord of everything. It says: Owner of all the things by which He is known. He owns the proofs.

That is where the ego loses its footing, and the reason is worth naming. Every human attempt at greatness depends on controlling the evidence about yourself. The account you give, the parts you leave out, the people who will speak for you. Vanity is an editing operation.

Here is an Owner whose evidence is the entire creation, edited by nobody and available to everybody. Including the man reading this at midnight, who has edited his own story quite carefully.

And the other half of the name completes it. The root for Lord is not only owner. The lexicons give it as the one who sets a thing right, provides for it, and raises it until it is complete. Owner and rearer in one word, which is the whole of what the four challenges had just demonstrated.
