Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 111 of 165
Al-An'am 6:111
“And even if We had sent down to them the angels [with the message] and the dead spoke to them [of it] and We gathered together every [created] thing in front of them, they would not believe unless Allāh should will. But most of them, [of that], are ignorant.”

Essence
Angels, the speaking dead, all creation as witnesses: none would bring faith unless Allah willed, for faith is His gift, not our verdict.
A reflection
Every created thing called as a witness
In a crown court, the evidence against a man is complete. His own doorbell camera, his phone's location data and three neighbours all tell the same story. His barrister urges him to change his plea. He folds his arms and pleads not guilty.
Evidence can corner a person. It cannot make him say yes.
This ayah imagines evidence on a scale no court has seen. 'Even if We sent the angels down to them, and the dead spoke to them'. Then a third scene: 'and We gathered every thing before them, face to face'. Each item answers a demand. They had asked for angels. They had said, bring back our fathers (44:36). They had asked for Allah and the angels to come as guarantors (17:92).
The word qubulan holds several readings. Face to face, before their very eyes. Group by group, nation after nation. Or as guarantors, standing surety. One commentator lingers on the last. Picture every created thing, speaking and silent alike, made to speak and vouch for the truth. He calls that among the greatest of miracles.
And still: 'they would not believe, unless Allah wills'. The sentence turns to the name Allah itself, and one commentator says this is to fill the hearer with awe.
Here our pride is quietly rebuked. We imagine faith as a verdict we deliver after weighing God's case. Convince me, and I will grant You my belief. The ayah reverses the courtroom. We do not grant Him belief. He grants belief to us.
Does that make Him a King who wants to be begged? He needs nothing from any of it. The gift is for the one who receives it. The proud man folds his arms. The humble one opens his hands.
