Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 33 of 165
Al-An'am 6:33
“We know that you, [O Muḥammad], are saddened by what they say. And indeed, they do not call you untruthful, but it is the verses of Allāh that the wrongdoers reject.”

Essence
Allah sees the grief their words cause, and lifts it: the denial was never really of the messenger, but of Allah's own signs.
A reflection
The usher in the corridor
A court usher steps into the corridor and reads out a judge's order. The man it concerns explodes. He shouts at the usher, jabs a finger at his badge, calls him useless. The usher waits, folds the paper and walks back in. He does not carry the insult home. It was never his order.
The ayah does something like this for the Prophet ﷺ. His people were calling him a liar, a poet, a madman. Allah answers: they are not really denying you. What they reject is My signs. Two classical commentaries reach for a household picture. A master hears that his servant has been insulted and says: they did not insult you, they insulted me. The point is not that nothing happened to the servant. It is that the weight of it now belongs to someone far greater.
Notice what this does to the ego. Most of us, when our faith is mocked, feel it as an attack on ourselves. Our pride is stung, so we answer to defend our pride. The ayah moves the self out of the centre. The message was never yours, so the rejection is not yours to avenge.
The same truth cuts the other way. If the rejection is not yours, neither is the acceptance. The usher who reads a welcome verdict should not take a bow either. A carrier who starts to feel that people believe because of him has quietly stolen something.
One commentary adds that the turn to the name Allah, rather than a pronoun, is there to raise awe. The phrase is heavy on purpose. Whoever turns away from the message is turning from the King of everything. That is far graver for them, and far lighter for you.
