Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 32 of 165
Al-An'am 6:32
“And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh, so will you not reason?”
Saheeh International
Essence
To people who said this life is everything, Allah calls it play and diversion, names a better home, and asks whether we will think.
A reflection
What the ayah does not say
A mother takes her three children to the park on a Sunday. They race to the swings, and she laughs out loud at the youngest. Then a sentence from a talk she heard drifts back: 'This world is nothing but play.' The laugh goes thin. For the rest of the afternoon she feels faintly guilty, as if joy were a small betrayal.
Many of us carry that reading. The world is worthless, enjoyment is suspect, and the serious believer should keep a little gloom on hand. Others hear the opposite and quietly file the ayah as old pessimism. Both readings slide past what the words say.
First, look at who is being answered. Three ayat earlier, deniers said: 'There is nothing but our life of this world' (6:29). The commentaries read this ayah as Allah's reply to exactly that claim.
Second, look at which life is meant. An early reading says this describes the life of the one who denies. A believer's life is folded around good deeds, so it is not play. Another commentary says plainly that life itself cannot be blamed. The Hereafter can only be earned inside it. A third glosses 'the life of this world' as being taken up with it for its own sake. Obedience, and whatever helps it, belongs to the Hereafter.
The Prophet ﷺ said the world and what is in it are cursed. He then made an exception: the remembrance of Allah and what goes with it, and a teacher or a learner. Al-Tirmidhi graded it ḥasan gharīb. The exception is the whole point. Whatever is joined to Allah is lifted out of the verdict.
A classical poet put it this way: part of this world's honour is that the Hereafter is reached through it.
The mother's laugh, given thanks for, was never the target. Play becomes 'play and diversion' when it is all there is.
