Sad 38:8

“Has the message been revealed to him out of [all of] us?" Rather, they are in doubt about My message. Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.”

Saheeh International

Essence

They argued about the man; Allah answered about Himself: their doubt is about My Reminder, and they have not yet tasted My punishment.

A reflection

From "him" to "My"

Their question was about a man. Has the Reminder been sent down to him, out of all of us? It was a question of rank: which of the leading families deserved such an honour. One commentator calls the objection simply envy put into words. Another adds that they judged honour only by wealth and status.

Allah's answer does not argue about the man at all. It changes the subject twice, and both times the new subject is Himself. Bal hum fī shakkin min dhikrī: rather, they are in doubt about My Reminder. Bal lammā yadhūqū ʿadhābi: rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.

That shift from 'him' to 'My' is the whole correction. The Quraysh imagined they were judging a colleague promoted above them. They were judging the One who sent him. One early commentator says it plainly: they did not doubt that Muhammad ﷺ was truthful. Their doubt was about whether the revelation came from Allah. Elsewhere the Quran says the same: it is not you they deny, but the signs of Allah (6:33).

Picture the residents of a block of flats on a winter evening. A notice in the lobby says the gas will be shut off at eight for urgent repairs. It was pinned up by the new concierge, not the managing agent. The residents spend the evening in the corridor arguing about whether he had the right to post it. Nobody reads it properly. At eight the boilers go cold.

The ego does this constantly. It turns every message into a question about the messenger's standing, because that is a question the ego can win. Who is she to say that? He has only been here a year. Meanwhile the message itself, from far higher than the messenger, goes unread.

This ayah humbles that habit. When you resent the person who brought you a truth, notice that the truth was never theirs. Your argument is with its Owner. Put that way, most such arguments end.

Does all this 'My' sound possessive, like a ruler guarding his reputation? Look at what He claims: the Reminder and its consequence. That is a signature, not a demand. A message nobody owns can be waved away as rumour. Allah puts His name to His. And He gains nothing from being believed: whoever strives, strives for himself (29:6).
