Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 48 of 165

Al-An'am 6:48

“And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. So whoever believes and reforms - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Messengers come only to bring good news and to warn; whoever believes and sets things right will have nothing to fear and nothing to grieve.

A reflection

Not sent to perform on request

This ayah answers a demand made earlier in the surah: why has no sign been sent down to him (6:37)? The commentaries read it as a reply. Messengers are not sent to produce wonders on request, or to be toyed with. One commentary says plainly that they have no power to bring signs at all. That belongs to Allah's will and wisdom.

The ayah is shaped as a restriction: We send them only as bringers of good news and warners. 'Only' draws a fence round the role. Messengers do not provide, do not open hearts by force, do not lift harm by their own power. Everything beyond the message stays with the One who sent it.

Another commentary notices the tense. Nursilu, We send, is a present that never stops. It describes a settled custom, the same for every messenger in every age. The job description never changed.

Picture a father who comes to his imam after the prayer. His son has drifted from faith, and he is desperate. 'Promise me he will come back,' he says. A good imam will not promise. He will tell the truth about what helps, and what harms. He will pray with the father and for the son. But he knows the key to the son's heart was never on his own keyring.

That honesty is a form of leadership. A leader who promises what only Allah controls creates followers who worship the leader. A leader who knows the limits of his role points people past himself.

The fence protects both sides. It protects the messenger from being made into more than a servant. And it protects us from looking to any human, however great, for what only Allah can give.
