Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 49 of 165

Al-An'am 6:49

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يَمَسُّهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ

“But those who deny Our verses - the punishment will touch[308] them for their defiant disobedience.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Calling His signs a lie leaves the signs untouched; it is the habit of stepping outside them that the punishment finally reaches and touches.

A reflection

The mountain does not need the skier to believe

Notice whose signs they are. Not 'the signs', and not 'some signs', but āyātinā: Our signs. The ayah speaks in the plural of majesty. The signs belong to the One who wrote them across the sky and into the Book.

That changes what denial is. A man who calls a sign a lie imagines he has dealt with it. In fact he has only dealt with himself. The sign stays exactly where it was. Its Owner loses nothing, because He needs nothing from the man who refuses it (35:15).

Picture a ski resort after a heavy snowfall. A rope is strung across the gate to the off-piste slope. A yellow board shows a triangle and the word for avalanche. A confident skier reads it, laughs, and ducks under the rope. He tells his friends the patrol is overcautious. The mountain hears none of it. The snow lies on the slope at the angle it has always lain. The board was never a request for his agreement. It was a kindness offered to him alone.

This is where the ego meets its true size. We sometimes picture our disbelief as a protest that wounds heaven. We sometimes picture our belief as a favour we do for God. The ayah dissolves both pictures. The signs were put there for our sake, and Allah is the Rich, the Praised (35:15). He is not enriched by being acknowledged.

Why, then, does He speak of Himself in such grand terms here? Not because He needs the praise. A creature who forgets the size of the One behind the sign will read every warning as a suggestion. Majesty is named so that the warning is weighed at its real weight. The pride that ducks under the rope is the only thing in danger.
