Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 7 of 165
Al-An'am 6:7
“And even if We had sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], a written scripture on a page and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would say, "This is not but obvious magic."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Give them a book they can hold, and the committed deniers would still call it plain magic: evidence was never what they lacked.
A reflection
If only I could hold it
Many sceptics say they would believe if given something they could hold. Not argument, not testimony: an object. This ayah takes the request at its strongest.
Suppose, it says, We sent down to you a book written on a sheet. Not glimpsed far off, but brought within reach. Suppose they handled it, turned it over, felt its edges with their own hands. Those set on disbelief would still say: 'This is nothing but plain magic.'
A theological commentary draws out what that means. Sight can be doubted; they could say their eyes were bewitched. Touch confirms sight until perception is as strong as it ever gets. To doubt what you both see and handle is no longer scepticism. It is doubting whether anything is there at all.
A man in a contract dispute is shown his own signature on the agreement. He says it is forged. A handwriting expert examines it and confirms it is his. He says the expert was paid. A second expert agrees with the first, and he says both were paid. At some point everyone in the room understands. No further evidence will be fetched, because none was ever going to be enough.
A classical objection sharpens the doubt. Before you trust a messenger, how would you know a descending book was not the work of some hidden being? The same theological commentary answers that this is not the ayah's concern. Its concern is people who would doubt whether the thing in their hands existed at all. That is no longer caution. It is refusal.
That is the ayah's point. Evidence was not the bottleneck. The Makkans already had the Quran recited to them and the signs of creation all around. A practical commentary adds the moon split before their eyes, which both Sahihs record.
Honest seekers are not the target here. Someone who truly wants to know will look, and keep looking. The ayah names a different stance: the verdict reached first, the evidence explained away afterwards.
