Al-Qamar 54:2

وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ

“And if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic."[1578]”

Saheeh International

Essence

They saw the moon break and called it magic: the heart had already turned away before the mouth found its excuse.

A reflection

The verdict before the replay

A football fan watches a tight penalty decision go to the video review. The replay has not even loaded on the screen. He is already shaking his head, already telling the man next to him that it was never a foul. Whatever the footage shows, he knows what he will say about it.

Look at the order of the words in this ayah. If they see a sign, they turn away, and then they say: magic. The turning comes first. The explanation comes second.

That order is the whole psychology of denial. People rarely examine evidence, find it weak, and then turn away. Much more often they turn away first, and then look for words to justify where they are already facing.

One classical theologian reads the ayah as describing a settled habit. It is their custom, he says: whenever they see a sign, they turn away. So when they saw the moon split, they turned away out of that same habit. The sign did not fail. It met a reflex that was waiting for it.

Another commentator notices that āya here is indefinite after "if". The sense is any sign at all. No sign, however clear, gets a hearing. They turn away from reflecting on it, he says, from pausing long enough to see how it points.

This is uncomfortable because it is so ordinary. We all know the experience of hearing a fact we dislike and feeling our minds begin to build a reply before the sentence is finished. A diagnosis we do not want, a criticism of our child, an ayah that challenges how we earn.

The ayah is not only describing Quraysh. It is describing a human reflex, and inviting us to catch it. The next time you feel yourself shaking your head before the replay has loaded, stop. Watch the footage. Then decide.
