Al-Qalam 68:14

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ

“Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Wealth and sons never made anyone exempt from the truth, however much they can make a person feel that they are.

A reflection

The two currencies of standing

Māl, wealth, meant in its oldest use gold and silver, then widened to cover anything owned and kept; among a desert people it most often meant herds, camels above all, the one asset that could feed a household, fund an alliance and signal standing all at once. Banīn, sons, carried a weight in that society modern readers can easily underestimate: not only affection, but manpower, protection, continuity, a man's name and influence carried forward after he could no longer carry it himself.

Together, māl and banīn were the two currencies that bought a man immunity from ordinary consequence in seventh-century Makkah. Wealth bought him allies and leverage. Sons bought him a standing army of loyalty and a guarantee that his name would not simply vanish. A man rich in both could, within reason, say and do things that would have cost a poorer, more exposed man dearly.

This ayah names exactly that calculation, and names it as the thing being relied upon, not as a virtue in itself. It does not condemn wealth or sons; both are described elsewhere in the Quran as blessings, tests and genuine goods. What it isolates is the specific use being made of them here: as a shield against truth, a kind of social armour thick enough that the man wearing it assumed nothing, not even revelation itself, could actually reach him through it.

The same calculation runs in every age, in different currencies: a title, a following, a bank balance large enough that consequences other people face simply stop applying. This ayah is a reminder that the armour has never actually worked, however convincing it has always looked from the outside.
