Al-Qalam 68:47

أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ

“Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Nobody handed them the record; they are simply announcing, as fact, what was never theirs to read in the first place.

A reflection

Screened from view, not erased from existence

Al-ghayb, the unseen, comes from a root meaning something screened from the eyes, not something absent altogether. The Arabs said ghābat al-shams, the sun has set, meaning it had passed behind the horizon, hidden but entirely intact somewhere a watcher simply could not follow it. A hollow in the ground concealing a traveller was a ghayb; a thicket hiding whatever moved inside it was a ghāba. In every case, the thing screened kept existing exactly as it was. Only the watcher's access to it had ended.

This is the picture worth holding against Quraysh's claim. They spoke with total confidence about the Hereafter's arrangements — their own favoured place in it — as though the matter were simply visible to them, available for the taking. The ayah's question corrects this precisely: the unseen has not stopped existing, and nobody is claiming it is nothing. It has simply never been screened open for them the way they were speaking as if it had.

The sun below the horizon has not ceased to exist; it has only passed behind a line nobody standing where Quraysh stood could see past. Confident talk about what lies on the far side of that line, from someone who has never once seen over it, describes imagination dressed as sight. There is a meaningful difference worth holding onto here: between saying something is unknown to a particular observer, and saying it does not exist at all. Quraysh's error was not wonder at a genuine mystery. It was mistaking their own screened view for the view from behind the screen, and speaking exactly as if the screen had already lifted for them personally, when it never had.
