As-Sajdah 32:5
“He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.”
Saheeh International
Essence
He arranges every affair from its end, sends the command down, and draws the sincere deed up a stairway no counting of ours can measure.
A reflection
The shipment three countries away
A factory floor manager times her production line to the second: scanners, loaders, packers, each station synced to the next. On the morning she is due to present the quarter's efficiency figures, a single container is held at a port three countries away. A storm nobody forecast has delayed it. The line stops. For one long hour, the woman who thought she was running the floor learns how much of it was never hers to run.
'He directs the affair from the heaven to the earth'. Not affairs in a scatter, but the affair: all of it, as one undertaking.
The verb is yudabbir. Its root is the back of a thing, its end. A spinner twisting thread away from her chest called that turn dabīr. An arrow that flew past its target was dābir. From looking at a matter's end came tadbīr: arranging an affair with its outcome already in view. So the ayah does not describe a busy manager reacting to events. It describes One who arranges every matter from where it ends.
A classical commentator notes the order. The previous ayah showed His creation; this one shows His command. 'His are the creation and the command' (7:54). A ruler with vast domains is great. If his command is carried out in them, he is greater. If it runs for a day and lapses, he is less than one whose command runs for ages.
The ego quietly assumes it is running things. Our schedules, our plans, the teams we hold together. Some of that is real stewardship. But we see the front of affairs, rarely the back. The shipment held up at a foreign port was always in other hands.
Does He tell us this to be praised? He needs nothing (35:15). It is told so that the manager standing over a stopped line can breathe. The affair was never hers alone to hold. She can do her part, make the next call, and leave the rest to the One who sees the end.
