Al-Jinn 72:10

وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا

“And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.”

Essence

The jinn who once stalked heaven's secrets now said 'we do not know': whether harm was meant for earth, or whether its Lord meant guidance.

A reflection

Not every upheaval is a punishment

A storm brings down the old minaret of a village mosque one winter night. By morning the talk outside is of punishment. Somebody must have done something. The elderly imam, standing in the rubble in his coat, says something else. 'We don't know yet what this is. We know what we're doing at eight o'clock: clearing it.'

The reflex he resisted is very old. When the familiar order breaks, the mind reaches for the darkest reading. This must be judgement. Something terrible is coming.

The jinn had every reason to think so. The sky they had known for ages had suddenly filled with guards and flames. Their old leader, an early report says, told them the sky was only ever guarded for one of two reasons. Either Allah meant to bring a sudden punishment on the people of the earth, or He was sending a prophet to guide them. So they said, honestly: we do not know which. Is harm intended for those on earth, or does their Lord intend guidance for them?

Notice what they did not do. They did not announce the end of the world. They did not pretend to know. They held both possibilities open, and went looking for the truth.

And the truth, when they found it, was the second. The guarded sky was not the sound of doom. It was a door being shut so that a message could come through clean. The thing that looked most frightening was the herald of the greatest mercy: a Messenger ﷺ, and a recitation at dawn.

There is a second reason the jinn could wait calmly. Their question carried a plain hope: that their Lord meant rashad, the road that truly arrives, for the people of the earth. That is worth remembering the next time the ground shifts. A redundancy, a diagnosis, a move nobody wanted, a world in uproar. The first reading is usually dread. The jinn's honesty is a better starting point: we do not know yet. Then do the next right thing, and keep looking for what Allah is doing.

The imam in the rubble had it right. Not every upheaval is a punishment. Some are the guards going up around something being sent.
