Al-Jinn · Makki · ayah 22 of 28

Al-Jinn 72:22

قُلْ إِنِّى لَن يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا

“Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.”

Essence

No one can shelter you from Allah, and there is no side-hole to hide in: the only escape from Him is to Him.

A reflection

Every shelter has an Owner

Read who is speaking. Not a sinner, not a doubter, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And he says: if Allah intended something for me, no one could shield me from it. One commentary spells out what that could mean: an illness, or death, or anything else He willed.

That sentence quietly dismantles every shelter we build. Think of what we lean on to feel safe. The pension. The insurance. The right passport. The friend in the right office. The reputation that makes people careful around us. None of these is wrong. But each one has an Owner above it, and each one works only while He permits.

The ego hates this. It likes to believe it has arranged its own safety. Ten good decisions, a little foresight, and the world can be held at arm's length. This ayah says that even the best of creation had no arm's length from Allah.

Someone may hear this as a display of raw dominance. Why would God announce that no one can protect even His beloved from Him? Read the second half before deciding. 'I will never find, apart from Him, a refuge'. The One you cannot be shielded from is the same One you can shelter in. His power is not a wall against you. It is the only roof there is.

And He does not need us to admit it. He is free of all need (35:15). The admission is for us. A person who knows no human shelter is final stops grovelling to human shelters. He becomes free in front of the powerful, and humble in front of his Lord.
