Al-Jinn · Makki · ayah 23 of 28
Al-Jinn 72:23
“But [I have for you] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.”

Essence
The one thing the Messenger ﷺ owned was the message itself, carried unaltered to your door; what you do with it is yours.
A reflection
A message that was never his
After two ayat of 'I cannot', the sentence finally says what he can do. 'Except a conveying from Allah, and His messages'. Even the one thing he owns is not his own. It is from Allah.
The commentaries spell out what that demands. He conveys from Allah by saying 'Allah said this', attributing the words to their Speaker. And he delivers the messages he was sent with, without adding or taking away anything.
Set that beside our own instincts. We love to be the author. We forward someone's idea with our name on it. We retell a story and improve it a little. We quote a scholar and quietly sharpen him to win the argument. The ego always wants a fingerprint on the message.
The most honoured man in history refused that fingerprint. His greatness lay precisely in adding nothing. The message carried the Sender's authority, and his only glory was to carry it whole.
Someone may ask: why then the warning that follows? 'Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, for him is the Fire of Hell'. Is God anxious to be obeyed? He is not. He is free of all need (35:15). Disobeying Him takes nothing from Him. The warning is not a ruler protecting his pride. It is the Sender telling you plainly what lies on the road you choose.
That is majesty of a quiet kind. He does not need you to listen. He sends the message anyway, carried by His best servant, all the way to your door.
