Al-Jinn · Makki · ayah 21 of 28

Al-Jinn 72:21

قُلْ إِنِّى لَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا رَشَدًا

“Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Prophet ﷺ can point you to the right road, but he cannot walk it for you: harm and guidance sit in Allah's grip alone.

A reflection

Not even the best of creation holds the grip

Amliku is from the root of ownership and kingship. Its plainest sense is having a thing in your grip, within your power. And here the most honoured human being who ever lived opens his hands and says: your harm and your guidance are not in my grip.

One early commentary gives the reason in a single line. The One who owns those things is Allah, to whom belongs the dominion of everything. The ayah is not a statement about the Prophet's ﷺ weakness. It is a statement about where power actually lives.

Now turn it on ourselves. If he did not hold these keys, what are we holding? We plan a child's future as if we wrote it. We assume the right school, the right words, the right pressure will produce the right person. We talk about 'turning people round' as though hearts were steering wheels. The ego loves that picture of itself at the controls.

The ayah takes the wheel out of our hands, and there is honest relief in that. We are not responsible for owning outcomes we were never given.

Someone may object. Does God need even His Messenger to disclaim all power, so that the glory stays with Him alone? But Allah needs nothing from anyone (35:15). He loses nothing if people imagine a man holds their guidance. They lose everything, because they lean on a hand that cannot hold them. The disclaimer is protection for the people, not a tribute owed to God.

And notice that the one who says it is not diminished. He is the servant who knew exactly what was his and what was not. That clarity is a kind of greatness the proud never reach.
