Al-Qiyamah 75:32

وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

“But [instead], he denied and turned away.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Unbelief is never a blank: what he would not affirm he called a lie, and from the prayer he turned his back.

A reflection

There is no blank space on this form

A message goes round the mosque group: who can help with Saturday's clean-up? A little tick shows it has been seen by sixty-three people. Nobody replies. On Saturday morning the imam sweeps the hall alone.

Nobody said no. But the silence was an answer.

Many readers bring a quiet assumption to this pair of ayat. They picture unbelief as a blank: a person who simply has not signed up. 'He did not affirm, he did not pray' sounds like an empty space on a form. Neutral. Undecided. Nothing done, so nothing to answer for.

This ayah closes that door. It begins with lākin, 'but rather', and fills the blank with two acts. He did not affirm; rather, he called it a lie. He did not pray; rather, he turned away.

A careful reader once objected that this sounds repetitive. If he did not affirm, surely he denied, so why say both? One commentator answered directly. The 'but rather' is there to remove a false impression. Without it, you might think the man was merely silent, or merely unsure. The ayah rules that out. He openly rejected, and he openly turned from obedience.

That is a hard truth about the human heart. The space where a response should be does not stay empty for long. A truth not taken in is soon explained away. A prayer not prayed is soon replaced by something else that takes its time. Indifference is rarely as neutral as it feels from the inside. Left alone, it hardens into a position.

None of this means every doubter is a denier. A person still searching, still asking, still looking, is not the man in this ayah. The ayah describes the end of a road, not someone standing at a crossroads.

But it does warn against a comfortable middle. 'I haven't decided' can be honest for a season. Left long enough, it becomes the seen-by-sixty-three of the soul. The message was read. Someone else swept the hall.
