Al-Qiyamah 75:3

أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ

“Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The oldest objection to rising again is asked here at full strength, and answered by the One who keeps the record of every scattered part.

A reflection

The objection at full strength, and the order that answers it

Put the objection in its strongest form, the way a careful materialist would. A person is a body. When the body dies, it comes apart. Its matter mixes with soil, feeds roots, washes into rivers and blows across continents. To gather 'his bones' you would have to pick his particles out of everything they have since become. And even then, why would the result be him?

This is not a new form of the doubt. A classical commentator states it in nearly these terms. The parts mix with dust, winds carry them to the far ends of the earth, and no one can tell them apart. The commentators did not soften the doubt before answering it.

His first answer looks back one ayah. Who said a person is only a body? The surah has just sworn by al-nafs, the self, and only now speaks of bones. That order, he notes, already separates the self from its frame. What governs the body is not the body.

His second answer grants the materialist his premise. Suppose the person really is the body. Two things still settle it. Allah knows every particular: not an atom's weight escapes Him (34:3). 'We know what the earth takes away from them, and with Us is a book that keeps' (50:4). And He has power over all that can exist. This arrangement of particles can exist, because it already did. Its first existence is the proof that it is possible.

Old timber barns have been taken down and raised again many miles away. Before the first beam comes down, the carpenter cuts a mark into every joint. Years later the barn stands again, the same barn, because someone kept the record. The beams did not have to stay together. The record had to stay intact.

The comparison limps, as every comparison with Allah must. He needs no chisel marks. But it shows where the objection quietly goes wrong. It assumes gathering depends on the pieces staying findable. It depends on the One who knows where they went.

What remains open? How the gathering will happen in detail, the surah does not say, and the commentators did not pretend to know. The ayah answers a narrower question: is it beyond Him? The next ayah replies: not even the fingertips.
