Al-Qiyamah القيامة
Makki · 40 ayat · 40 with pondering
- Ayah 1The surah swears by a Day nobody has yet seen, and names that Day not the End but the Standing.
- Ayah 2After the Day, Allah swears by the voice inside you that keeps asking what you meant: a small court that sits before the great one.
- Ayah 3The oldest objection to rising again is asked here at full strength, and answered by the One who keeps the record of every scattered part.
- Ayah 4To the man who doubts his bones can be gathered, Allah answers 'Yes', and points to the finest part of him: even his fingertips.
- Ayah 5Having answered the doubt about bones, the surah names what lay underneath it: not a lack of proof, but a wish to keep going unchecked.
- Ayah 6The two words Allah swore by come back in man's mouth as a sneer, and the surah answers his 'When?' with his own eyes.
- Ayah 7The first answer to 'When?' is in the asker's own eyes, stunned like a man who has looked straight into lightning.
- Ayah 8Every eclipse anyone has ever watched has cleared; this one, the commentators say, does not.
- Ayah 9The two lights that were never allowed to meet are brought together, and the sun, named for never standing still, is finally made to stop.
- Ayah 10The man who mocked 'When?' now asks 'Where?' in panic: the best runner alive, on the one day there is nowhere to run.
- Ayah 11On the Day, the mountain every person runs to is gone; so run now, while you can, to the only refuge left, Allah Himself.
- Ayah 12Every restless road you are on ends at one address, and that Day everything that has been moving comes to rest with your Lord.
- Ayah 13That Day you hear the full news of your life: all you sent ahead, and all you held back or left behind.
- Ayah 14You will not need anyone to tell you what you did: you were there, and the evidence has been on you all along.
- Ayah 15However many excuses you throw down, like curtains drawn across a window, the one behind them still knows what is in the room.
- Ayah 16Even the Prophet ﷺ, racing out of love to hold on to revelation, was told to stop and listen: the keeping was not his burden.
- Ayah 17The One who will gather your scattered bones promised to gather His words in His Messenger's chest: the keeping was always His.
- Ayah 18When the Quran is recited, following begins with silence, then reciting it as you heard it, then living by it.
- Ayah 19Allah did not only promise to keep His words; He promised to make them clear, in His time and through His Messenger.
- Ayah 20The surah's diagnosis in one line: the heart kneels down at whatever is nearest, and lets the lasting thing slip behind it.
- Ayah 21The danger is rarely denying the later life outright; it is leaving it, quietly and in the present tense, while believing in it all along.
- Ayah 22On that Day some faces will shine like a tree in new leaf, because what was inside them has finally reached the surface.
- Ayah 23The highest joy of the Garden is not anything in it but its Lord, seen when the veil is lifted by faces turned to Him.
- Ayah 24Other faces that Day will darken and knot, wearing the scowl some first wore in this world when the truth was put to them.
- Ayah 25The scowling faces are sure a back-breaking blow is coming, and that dread never settles; the shining faces have nothing left to wait for.
- Ayah 26No: the love of the hasty world ends at the collarbones, where the last breath rises and every postponed good deed meets its deadline.
- Ayah 27Round the dying, one question carries two meanings: who can heal him and keep him here, and who will carry his soul up?
- Ayah 28At the end he is sure it is the parting: a clean line drawn between him and all he loved, nightfall or dawn.
- Ayah 29The legs that carried him everywhere wind together and fail, as the hardest day of this world is wound into the next.
- Ayah 30Everyone who ever drove themselves through life is, that Day, driven, and the driving ends in one place only: your Lord.
- Ayah 31At the soul's leaving, a whole life is summed up in two missing acts: he never affirmed the truth, and never once prayed.
- Ayah 32Unbelief is never a blank: what he would not affirm he called a lie, and from the prayer he turned his back.
- Ayah 33Having turned his back on his Lord, he strolled home to his family, stretching his back in a swagger, as if he had won.
- Ayah 34It has come near you, and nearer: the nearness he turned his back on now faces him, as a warning said to his face.
- Ayah 35Then again, nearer still: the warning is repeated after a pause, so that no one can say they heard it only once.
- Ayah 36Does the human being really think he will be left like a stray camel, grazing where he likes, with no one to call him back?
- Ayah 37Before the swagger and the denial there was a drop, poured out, and the surah asks the proud to remember where they began.
- Ayah 38Then the drop became a clinging thing, and Allah shaped it and made it even: the human 'was', but only He 'made'.
- Ayah 39From one small drop He made two, male and female, each the other's pair, and neither chose which it would be.
- Ayah 40The surah ends with a question, not a statement, about the One who made you from a drop, and leaves the last word to you.
