أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّن مَّنِىٍّ يُمْنَىٰ

“Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?”

Essence

Before the swagger and the denial there was a drop, poured out, and the surah asks the proud to remember where they began.

A reflection

The last water in the bucket

A man who has just won an argument online leans back in his chair, hands behind his head, and stretches. He has put someone in their place.

The surah has just described a stretch like that: the denier going home, swaggering (75:33). Now it asks him a quiet question. Was he not a nuṭfa, from fluid poured out?

Nuṭfa is a small word for a small thing. The lexicons say it means a little clear water: what is left in a waterskin, or at the bottom of a bucket. A night of rain that dripped until dawn was nuṭūf. A pearl earring, shaped like a drop, was a nuṭfa. The human fluid is named nuṭfa, they explain, for how little it is.

So the question holds a mirror up to the swagger. Before the stretched back and the boasting walk, there were a few drops of water. You did not choose to begin. You did not design your first cell. You were the last mouthful in a bucket, and Someone else carried the bucket.

One commentator noticed a further edge in yumnā, 'poured out'. It points, he said, to the humbleness of that origin, a fluid that leaves the body by the way of impurity. Such a thing does not befit rebellion against Allah. He added that the Quran says this by allusion, as it elsewhere hints at bodily need without naming it (5:75).

The Quran makes the same move twice in almost the same words. He created the human being from a drop, 'and then, behold, he is an open adversary' (16:4; 36:77). The drop learns to argue with its Maker.

Someone might ask why Allah reminds us of this. Is it to belittle us, or because He wants our praise? Neither. He is free of all need (35:15), and gains nothing from our humility. The reminder is for the swaggerer's sake. Pride is a lie about where we came from, and the cure is the truth. Elsewhere the same origin is followed by honour: He proportioned that drop and breathed into it of His spirit (32:9).

Hands behind the head is a good moment to remember the bucket.
