Al-Insan 76:16
قَوَارِيرَا۟ مِن فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًا
“Clear glasses [made] from silver of which they have determined the measure.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Glass that is silver, clear and unbreakable, filled to the exact measure of your thirst: the one cup this world has no likeness for.
A reflection
The one thing with no likeness here
Most of us carry a quiet assumption about the Garden. It is this world's best things, upgraded. Better fruit, finer silk, bigger rooms. We picture the most luxurious hotel we have seen, and add a little.
This ayah breaks that habit with one phrase. Qawārīrā min fiḍḍatin: glass, made of silver.
The commentaries preserve a saying of one of the Companions most associated with explaining the Quran. There is nothing in the Garden, he said, but that you have been given something like it in this world, except glass of silver. Another saying of his makes the point physical. Take silver from this world and beat it as thin as a fly's wing. You still could not see water through it. The Garden's glass has the whiteness of silver and the clearness of glass.
Walk into a sweet shop in Leicester before Eid. On a tray of barfi lies a sheet of edible silver leaf. It has been beaten so thin that it tears if you breathe on it. Hold a piece up to the light, and you still cannot see through it. Silver, however thin, stays silver.
That is why the first hearers would have stopped at this phrase. They knew glass, fragile and clear. They knew silver, bright and opaque. A cup that was both was not a richer version of anything. It was a contradiction, made real.
One commentary says the word kānat in the previous ayah points to exactly this. The cups 'came to be' by Allah's 'Be', a wondrous making that joins the qualities of two opposite substances.
So the ayah gives us one item on the list that cannot be imagined by upgrading. It is a small, deliberate break in our picture. If even the cup has no likeness here, then everything else we have pictured is, at best, a name for something we have not seen.
