Madani · 31 ayat · 31 with pondering
- Ayah 1Long ages ran before anyone said your name; the question asks you to admit it, and then to wonder who brought you in.
- Ayah 2From a little mingled water you were made, on purpose, to be tested, and given ears and eyes to sit the test.
- Ayah 3You were shown the road, not dragged down it; every morning the same person can walk it grateful, or cover the gift and turn away.
- Ayah 4The chains are already prepared and the warning is given early; yet the surah spends one ayah on them, and eighteen on the garden.
- Ayah 5The righteous are handed a cup that is never empty, scented with camphor: named in your words, so your heart can find its way.
- Ayah 6Allah's servants drink their fill from a spring that runs wherever they lead it: not idleness, but ease that answers to you.
- Ayah 7They keep even the promises made to themselves, and their fear of a Day whose harm spreads like cracking glass makes them kind.
- Ayah 8They fed the poor, the orphan and the captive from the plate they wanted for themselves, and that is the gift the Garden remembers.
- Ayah 9Their gift was aimed at one Face only, so they wanted nothing back, not even thanks, and that freed the giver too.
- Ayah 10They feared, from their own Lord, a Day with a frowning face, so they made sure no face near them went hungry.
- Ayah 11Every fear they carried is answered: the harm they dreaded is held off, and they are met with shining faces and glad hearts.
- Ayah 12They refused reward and thanks from the people they fed; Allah gives them both, and writes the cost of their patience into the gift itself.
- Ayah 13A line the poets kept for the pampered few, untouched by sun or frost, is given to those who stood in the weather for others.
- Ayah 14The palm-grower's hardest work, freeing the clusters for the hand, is done in full for the people of the Garden, and the branch comes down.
- Ayah 15The silver that kings kept behind closed doors, and that believers were told to leave to others here, keeps coming round to them there.
- Ayah 16Glass that is silver, clear and unbreakable, filled to the exact measure of your thirst: the one cup this world has no likeness for.
- Ayah 17First they drank; now they are given to drink, from a cup warmed with the spice the Arabs loved most, and the honour keeps rising.
- Ayah 18The surah that warned of chains now names a spring of water as smooth as linked rings: ginger's warmth, without its sting.
- Ayah 19The Garden's servers look like pearls flung at a wedding: the Quran's word for scattered dust, turned into scattered light.
- Ayah 20Wherever the eye falls there, it finds only bliss and a great kingdom, given by the King to people who owned almost nothing here.
- Ayah 21Silk outside, silver on the wrist, and then the Host Himself pours the last cup: a drink that washes the heart clean of every grudge.
- Ayah 22After all the silk and silver, the last word is not a wage but a thank-you: your striving, however small, was seen and received.
- Ayah 23The ayah says 'We' twice before any verb: the Quran is not his invention, and it came down in stages, on purpose.
- Ayah 24Hold your soul steady under your Lord's verdict, what He decrees and what He commands, and follow no one into sin or ingratitude.
- Ayah 25Mark the two edges of every day, first light and lengthening shadow, by bringing your Lord's name back to heart and tongue.
- Ayah 26Give your Lord part of the night, forehead on the ground, and let your glorifying run long, a tether let out to full length.
- Ayah 27The danger is not enjoying this world but loving the hasty one so much that you turn your back on a heavy Day still ahead.
- Ayah 28He built your frame and lashed every joint tight; He needs none of you, and can make you again as He made you first.
- Ayah 29The surah ends its case with an open door: it has reminded you, and now the road to your Lord is yours to take.
- Ayah 30Your willing is real, yet it moves only within His will, and His will is never blind: He is Knowing and Wise.
- Ayah 31The surah ends at two doors: mercy, which He opens to whom He wills, and a painful punishment made ready for those who did wrong.
