Al-Insan · Madani · ayah 28 of 31

Al-Insan 76:28

“We have created them and strengthened their forms, and when We will, We can change their likenesses with [complete] alteration.”

Saheeh International

Essence

He built your frame and lashed every joint tight; He needs none of you, and can make you again as He made you first.

A reflection

Who tied the knots?

A powerlifter lifts twice his own bodyweight and posts the video with two words: all me. Every joint in it held. Every tendon took the load. He did not make a single one of them.

The ayah answers that caption before it was written. Naḥnu khalaqnāhum wa shadadnā asrahum: We created them, and We bound their frame tight. The 'We' comes first again, as it did five ayat earlier. The credit is not left unassigned.

Asr carried a picture for its first hearers. A man asara his saddle when he lashed it on with a leather thong, the isār. The early commentators read asr here as the frame itself. Some made it the joints, others the sinews and veins that bind limb to limb. The body is a saddle lashed on by its Maker, every strap pulled tight.

Then the reminder bites. One commentator reads the ayah as a reproach for blessing answered with denial. I shaped your body and fixed it with strength, it says, and then you deny Me? Another links it to the ayah before. The very body these people used to enjoy the hasty life was His work, he says, and He can take it back.

Someone may ask why Allah tells people that He made them and could replace them. Is this insecurity, a need to be acknowledged? The same commentator answers that the purpose is to show His complete independence. He has no need of any creature at all. Insecure power clings. This ayah says the opposite: it could let go.

That is what shrinks the ego. Not an insult, but an accurate account. The strong arm was lent, the knots were tied by another, and the One who tied them does not need the lifter.
