Ar-Rum 30:27

“And it is He who begins creation; then He repeats it, and that is [even] easier for Him. To Him belongs the highest description [i.e., attribute] in the heavens and earth. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”

Essence

He began you and He will bring you back; He reasons with you in your own measure, then reminds you that nothing is like Him.

A reflection

Too heavy for anyone, says the four-year-old

An early report gives the setting. The unbelievers of Makkah marvelled at the idea that Allah would bring the dead back to life. This ayah answered them.

Picture a four-year-old in a living room. He puts both hands against the sofa and pushes until his face goes red. It does not move. He turns to his father, quite certain. 'It's too heavy. Nobody can move it.' The father smiles, lifts one end with one hand, and slides it across the floor.

The child was not lying. He was measuring the world by his own arms. That is all the deniers were doing. Bones turned to dust, scattered, mixed with earth. To them, gathering that up again was the hardest thing imaginable. So they decided it was impossible.

The ayah does not argue with their feeling. It turns it round. You already accept that He began you, from nothing, through every stage in the womb. By your own measure, doing a thing again is easier than doing it the first time. So why is the easier of the two the one you refuse?

The ego does the same thing in quieter ways. We decide what Allah can and cannot do by what we can imagine. My debts are too large to be cleared. My son is too far gone to come back. This habit is too old to break. Each sentence is a child pushing a sofa.

Then comes a line that shrinks us further. 'His is the highest description in the heavens and the earth.' A classical commentator explained it like this. He is described in the heavens and the earth, on the tongues of creatures and by the signs, as the One who is never unable. Not to begin, not to repeat, not anything.

Humility here is not self-hatred. It is simply putting down the measuring tape. What is too heavy for you was never too heavy for Him.
