Al-Mursalat 77:22
إِلَىٰ قَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
“For a known extent.”
Saheeh International
Essence
For a known, fixed term: nine months that feel, from inside the waiting, like an open question, but were never anything other than already measured.
A reflection
A stride that never overshoots
The lexicons reach for an exacting image to explain qadar, measure: a horse called aqdar when its hind hooves land exactly where its forefeet had just stepped, stride after stride, as though every single movement had been measured out in advance with no margin of error at all. A poet's own advice captures the same instinct in ordinary life: measure with your own forearm, know your actual size before you commit to a claim about it. The root, across every one of its uses, resists vagueness. A qadar is never "roughly this much". It is exactly this much, known precisely by the One setting it.
Applied to the length of a pregnancy, this ayah insists the nine months are not an approximate biological average that happens to apply most of the time, with individual cases simply varying unpredictably around it. They are ma'lum, known, precisely measured for this particular case by the One who set the whole process running in the first place. The variation that does occur between different pregnancies is not the absence of a fixed measure. It is simply a different fixed measure, known with the same exactness, for a different case.
This distinction matters a great deal more than it first appears to on a casual reading. A process genuinely left to blind chance would carry real, open uncertainty about whether it will resolve well at all, or resolve at any particular way whatsoever. A process that is instead precisely measured from the very start, even when that measure remains entirely hidden from the person living inside it day by day, carries a completely different character underneath the apparent uncertainty: not actual uncertainty about the eventual outcome itself, only uncertainty, from where the waiting person currently stands, about the specific number attached to it.
