Al-Mursalat 77:21
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ فِى قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ
“And We placed it in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Then We placed it carefully in a firm resting place: the same word used for an honoured seat beside a king, now describing a single cell given total, undeserved shelter.
A reflection
A seat beside the king, in the dark
Makin, firm or secure, carries a double life in the lexicons that is easy to miss on a quick reading. Its everyday, humble picture is a desert lizard's eggs, held safe inside the mother's body, valued enough to be prized and protected without the eggs themselves ever having done anything to earn that protection. Its more elevated picture is a courtier given makana, a firm, trusted seat beside a king, placed in a position of real security and standing purely because the one with the power to grant it chose to grant it.
This ayah quietly holds both pictures together in a single word describing the womb. A fertilised cell, with no accomplishment, no awareness, not even consciousness yet to its name, is nonetheless placed in a qarar makin, a firm, secure resting place, with exactly the same word used for the highest honour a human court could offer a person. The security was never earned by effort or merit. It was granted, completely and without condition, to something that could not yet ask for it or even recognise it was receiving it.
That ordering, total security granted before any merit could possibly exist to justify it, is worth sitting with as a template for how a great deal of real provision actually arrives in a life, long before a person could grasp it or thank anyone for it: the air that filled your lungs before you understood breathing, the quiet, attentive care that surrounded your earliest days before you could even form a single memory of any of it, the firm and honoured seat given to you, exactly like the courtier's own seat, for reasons that had nothing whatsoever to do with anything you had yet done to earn or deserve it.
