An-Naba 78:31
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا
“Indeed, for the righteous is attainment[1826] -”
Saheeh International
Essence
After the Fire, the turn: for those who kept a shield between themselves and harm, a triumph beyond the desert.
A reflection
The shield, not the shiver
In a fabrication workshop, a welder picks up his torch. Before he strikes the arc, he lowers his mask. He does it without thinking, every single time. He is not frightened of welding; he has done it for twenty years. He simply knows what the light would do to his eyes, and he intends to go home seeing.
Many people hear muttaqīn as 'the God-fearing' and picture anxious, joyless people. The root pictures something quite different. The lexicons say it has one image: pushing harm away from a thing by putting something between them. A wiqāya is whatever does that. A good saddle was praised when it did not rub the camel's back raw. A horse with a sore hoof steps carefully on hard ground, guarding its foot. So taqwā means placing yourself inside protection from what would harm you before Allah. These are established senses.
A near-synonym study makes the difference sharp. Awe is something you feel. Taqwā is what you do about it. Fear sees the danger; taqwā raises the shield and keeps walking. It is sometimes called fear only because fear is its cause.
One concise commentary defines the muttaqīn here plainly. They are those mindful of their Lord, doing what He commands and avoiding what He forbids. A related word entry adds a hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari: shield yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date.
So this ayah, placed right after the Fire, is not addressed to people frozen by terror. It is addressed to people who took simple, steady precautions. They lowered the mask before the arc, day after day, and so they kept their sight.
What is your mask? It may be a prayer on time, a tongue held in an argument, or half a date given quietly. Lower it once today, before the spark.
