At-Takwir 81:16

ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ

“Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The stars run their course and slip home like gazelles into their coverts; the One who swears by them keeps every runner, and never tires.

A reflection

The Keeper who never rests

A mother of four has run her household for twenty years. She plans every meal, knows every appointment, remembers every birthday. Then a sudden illness puts her in hospital for a week. She lies there sure the house is falling apart. When she comes home, the kitchen is untidy and the youngest has worn the same jumper for three days. But everyone has eaten, got to school and been kept safe.

This ayah describes the stars with two words. Al-jawārī: the runners. The root is running water, the opposite of water that stands still. The Arabs used it for anything that runs a course: a ship, the sun, a racehorse. Al-kunnas: those that go into their coverts. A kinās was a gazelle's shady lair, scraped out of the sand down to cool earth, where it lies up in the heat.

So the sky is pictured as a herd. Each star runs out across the night and each goes home to its covert on time. None of them keeps the herd. There is a Keeper, and He is not one of the runners.

'Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him' (2:255). The stars run and rest. He does neither, because He needs neither. That is the part the ego struggles with. We quietly believe that if we stop running, things will collapse. The feeling of being indispensable is one of the most comfortable forms of pride.

The mother in hospital learned what the stars already know. The household never depended on her alone; it was held. That discovery is not a humiliation. It is a release.

Why does Allah swear by these runners, if He needs no one's admiration? Because we need to look at them. The oath turns our eyes to a sky that runs perfectly without our help. Then we can put down the burden of running everything ourselves.
