Al-Inshiqaq 84:22
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَ
“But those who have disbelieved deny,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The problem was never a lack of signs: those who cover the truth keep on calling it a lie.
A reflection
Tape over the warning light
A man's dashboard shows an amber engine warning light. It has been on for three weeks. Instead of booking the car in, he cuts a small square of black tape and sticks it over the light. The dashboard looks clean again. The engine, of course, has not changed at all.
Bal alladhīna kafarū yukadhdhibūn: rather, those who disbelieve deny. The root of kafarū has one meaning at its heart: covering. The Arabs called a farmer kāfir because he covers the seed with earth. The night was kāfir because its darkness covers everything. So was the sea, which hides what is in it. The Quran itself uses the word for farmers: rain whose growth delights the kuffār, the tillers (57:20).
From that picture, the word moved inward. Kufr is the covering of a truth, or of a blessing. One lexicon adds that the signs pointing to the Creator are themselves a gift. Whoever refuses them has pulled a cover over that gift and hidden it from himself.
Notice what the ayah does with that word. The previous verses asked what stops them from believing, and why they do not bow when the Quran is recited. Now comes bal, 'rather', a turn. One classical commentator describes it as a step up. It moves from not bowing when the Quran is recited to openly calling it a lie.
One lexical account adds a chilling detail: kufr can mean covering so completely that the thing is lost. Tape a light over for long enough and you forget it was ever there.
The tape on the dashboard is a small picture of that choice. The warning is real, and the driver knows it. Covering it does not repair anything. It only removes the discomfort of seeing it.
Ask honestly where you have put tape over a light. A verse you skip because it unsettles you. A reminder you mute. A truth about yourself you have learned not to look at. The first step back from kufr is simply peeling the tape off.
