Al-Ghashiyah 88:1

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ

“Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Day that will cover everyone arrives first as a question, the way real news does: has it reached you yet?

A reflection

Cloth over the saddle, a crowd at the door

On a bright afternoon at the seaside, a sea fret can roll in off the water in minutes. The pier goes first, then the beach huts, then the queue at the ice-cream van. Nobody is consulted. The family with the best picnic spot vanishes into the same grey as the man selling buckets.

The first hearers had a word for whatever comes over a thing and wraps it: ghāshiya. It was the cloth thrown over a saddle, and the leather fitted over a sword's scabbard. A man who fainted was one whom something had 'come over'. Even the crowd of visitors pressing at a man's door was his ghāshiya, the people who came over his threshold.

So the Last Day is named for covering. One classical commentary gives three reasons it earns the name. It arrives suddenly, the way a fret arrives. It takes in everyone, the first generations and the last. And it wraps them in its terrors, so that nothing is left sticking out.

Some early authorities heard the word differently: the Fire, which covers the faces of its people (14:50). The most careful reading declines to choose. Allah did not say which covering He meant, and both of them cover. So the word is left as wide as He left it.

There is a sharper edge here too. The same root describes a covering people choose for themselves. The people of Nūḥ wrapped their garments over their heads so they would not have to hear him (71:7). We have our own versions: the headphones, the full diary, the subject changed at dinner. A person can spend a lifetime pulling cloth over his own head. This ayah names the one covering that nobody pulls off.
