Al-Ghashiyah 88:24
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ
“Then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah is named here for the first time in the surah: the greatest punishment, from the One to whom greatness truly belongs.
A reflection
Contending for the cloak
Read the surah from the start and notice something. The name Allah does not appear until this ayah. There were faces, a fire, a garden, a camel, the sky, a reminder. Then, at the moment the Prophet ﷺ is told the rejecters are not his to control, the name arrives. One early commentator explains the effect. Allah tells His Prophet that He Himself takes charge of their punishment, not the Prophet. He is the One who requites.
And the punishment is al-akbar, the greatest. The root is plain size, then weight: a matter kabura on someone when it was too heavy to carry. The lexicons draw the line that matters most. For Allah, greatness is simply His true state. In us, kibr is raising the self above what it really is.
The Prophet ﷺ joined the two in a hadith. Might is His lower garment and pride His cloak, Allah says; whoever contends with Me for them, I will punish him (Sahih Muslim). The verb is ʿadhdhabtuhu, the same verb as this ayah. The one who turned away and covered the truth was, in the end, contending for a cloak that was never his size.
That is the ego's oldest mistake. It tries on greatness that belongs to Another, and wears it everywhere: at work, at home, in the heart's quiet verdicts on everyone else.
Isn't it arrogant, someone asks, for God to claim pride and punish those who contest it? In a creature, pride is a lie about itself. In the Creator it is the truth. And He gains nothing from our humility or loses nothing by our pride. Humility is how we stop lying about our size, and it is for our sake.
