Al-Fajr 89:1

وَٱلْفَجْرِ

“By the dawn”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah swears by the dawn: the night's dam breached by a light no lamp can make, and a daily rehearsal of the Rising.

A reflection

Our lamps only hide it

On the second night of a school residential in a remote valley, a teacher wakes her dormitory at half past five. Coats over pyjamas, the children stand in a wet field and wait. Then, along the whole length of the ridge, the dark begins to thin. An eleven-year-old whispers that she has never seen this before. At home, a streetlight outside her bedroom window has turned the night sky orange all her life.

Al-fajr is not a gentle word. The Arabs used its verb for breaching an earth dam: cutting a wide gap in the bank so that the held-back water bursts through. From that picture comes the dawn. It is the night's dam broken open by light.

Notice what our cities have done. We have lit them so thoroughly that many of us never see the breach at all. Our lamps can hold back the dark on one street. Not one of them can split the night open. They only hide the One who does.

The Quran asks the question plainly. If Allah made the night continuous over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah could bring you light? Will you not listen (28:71)?

The ego likes to live by its own lamps. It works late under them, takes pride in them, and forgets whose light it was really working by. The dawn humbles that, gently, every single day. You did not order it. You cannot delay it. You will not be consulted about tomorrow's.

Someone may ask why Allah swears by His own creation at all. Is He impressing us, like a host pointing at his own hospitality? He is free of all need (35:15), and our awe adds nothing to Him. One classical reading hears the oath as sworn by the Lord of the dawn, pointing past the light to its Owner. The oath is for us. It stops a hurried person long enough to look east.

So the humble response is not complicated. Switch off one lamp, and watch Him open the night.
