Al-'Alaq 96:1

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

“Recite in the name of your Lord who created –”

Saheeh International

Essence

Heaven's first word was Read, spoken to a man who could not read, with a name to begin by: his Lord's, not his own.

A reflection

Whose name goes over the door?

A young man opens his first barbershop on a high street. The chairs arrive late and the mirrors are still wrapped in plastic. But the sign goes up on day one: his own name in gold letters, a foot high, lit at night.

It is a very human instinct. We want our name on whatever we begin. The first command of revelation moves another name to the front: iqraʾ bi-smi rabbika, read in the name of your Lord.

One classical reading hears an Arab custom in the phrase. A man would say he built a house 'in the name of the prince', or wrote a book 'in the name of the minister'. He meant: for him, and under his protection. So the act becomes His. And then, the commentator adds, how would the devil dare to meddle with what belongs to Allah?

Then the ayah gives the reason in two words: alladhī khalaq, who created. The verb has no object. One reading leaves it open on purpose: He is the One from whom all creating comes, with no creator beside Him. Another fills it with everything, the way 'Allah is greater' means greater than all things.

Set the shop sign beside that. The young man did not make the hands that hold the scissors, or the eye that judges a clean line. He did not create the town walking past his window. The ego wants to sign the work. This ayah asks you to sign it under a greater Name.

Does Allah need His name at the front? The commentators on this passage answer plainly. He created and taught out of generosity, not from any need, for He is the Rich, the Praised. 'Whoever strives only strives for himself; Allah is free of need of all the worlds' (29:6). Beginning in His name adds nothing to Him. It lifts from you the tiring work of being your own headline, and it puts what you build under protection.
