Al-Qadr 97:3

لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”

Saheeh International

Essence

One night, given its due, outweighs a whole lifetime of months, and Allah names only the least of what it is worth.

A reflection

A lifetime on one side, and the rest left uncounted

Read the death notices in a local paper and look only at the ages. Seventy-nine. Eighty-four. Eighty-one. Eighty-six. A thousand months is eighty-three years and four months, as the sources work it out. It is roughly the age printed beside most of those names. It is a whole human life, from the first cry to the last breath.

Now picture how the first hearers counted months. The word shahr first meant the new crescent. People went out at dusk to look for a thread of light low in the west, and called out when someone spotted it. A poet praised the sharp-eyed man who saw it first. Each month was named after that shared act of looking up. A thousand months is a thousand crescents, a thousand evenings of watching the sky. And alf, a thousand, was the Arabs' number for the utmost. One lexicon ties it to joining: the point where units, tens and hundreds come together complete. When someone wished to live for ever, the Quran says he longs to be given a thousand years (2:96).

So the ayah sets a lifetime of crescents on one side of the scale and one night on the other. Then it says khayr: better.

One classical reading stops on that word. The ayah does not say 'equal to a thousand months'. It says 'better than'. It names a lower limit and leaves the rest unsaid. The same source compares it to grain sold by the heap. This much is weighed, it says, and the rest is poured out without measuring.

The sources explain that the night is better than a thousand months in which there is no Night of Decree. That qualification matters. It is not that other nights are worthless. It is that this one carries something no ordinary night carries.

Few of us will see a thousand months. Many of us fear we have wasted a good share of the ones we have had. This ayah is not a scolding for that. It is an offer. On one night, the scale can be tipped further than all those crescents together.
