Al-Inshiqaq 84:3

وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ

“And when the earth has been extended[1889]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The earth is pulled taut like a hide on a frame, every hill and tower pressed flat, until no one has a landmark left.

A reflection

No landmark for anyone

Read the language of property listings for a week and you will notice how much we pay for height. An 'elevated position'. 'Commanding views'. A home 'overlooking the valley'.

The house on the hill costs more than the house in the hollow, because it lets you look down.

Wa-idhā al-arḍu muddat: and when the earth is stretched. The early explanations reach for an image every Arab trader knew. At the great fair of ʿUkāẓ, hides were stretched on frames. When leather is pulled taut, the commentators say, every fold and crease in it disappears and the surface lies level. So the earth will be stretched. Its mountains and hillocks will be removed, and, in one early summary, no building and no mountain will remain on it. The Quran describes the same scene elsewhere: 'He will leave it a level plain. You will not see therein a depression or an elevation' (20:106–107).

The word for earth, arḍ, already carries this. The Arabs used it for whatever lies low and faces the sky. On that Day even the heights of the earth are lowered to match its name.

Sahih Muslim adds the detail that goes straight to the ego. The Prophet ﷺ said people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection on white, pale land, like a round loaf of fine flour. On it there will be no landmark for anyone.

No landmark for anyone. No boundary stone with your family's name on it. No tower you paid for, no hill you owned, no view that was yours. Everything we build to be seen from a distance, and to look down from, is pressed out like a crease in leather.

Someone may ask whether this is God resenting human achievement, like a ruler who pulls down every monument but his own. It is not. He loses nothing to our towers and gains nothing by flattening them. He is 'the Free of need, the Praiseworthy' (35:15). The levelling is not jealousy. It is simply the truth about height, told early. Every elevation we stand on was borrowed ground.

So the humbling works in both directions. The proud lose their view. And the one who lived in the hollow all his life, looked down on by everyone, finds that on that plain nobody is above him.
