Az-Zalzalah 99:8
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُۥ
“And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The smallest wrong is not too small to be seen: like a spark, it can spread, and unless it is erased it will be shown to you.
A reflection
One ember on a dry fence
On a still summer evening, a family sits round a garden fire pit. One ember lifts on the warm air and drifts over the fence. Nobody sees it land. It settles on a panel that has baked dry for weeks. By midnight, three gardens along the terrace have lost their fences, and a shed has gone with them. The ember was smaller than a fingernail.
The word the ayah uses for wrong is sharr. The lexicons give it a clear physical family. The root's core idea is spreading and flying apart. The same letters describe laying meat or cloth out in the sun to dry, spread flat. And sharar, from the same root, is the sparks that fly out of a fire; the Quran uses it for the sparks of Hell 'like great palaces' (77:32). Both of these senses are established in the lexicons. Reading evil itself through the image of scattering sparks is an interpretation some scholars draw, not a certainty; but it fits this ayah closely.
Here the sharr is weighed in the smallest unit the first hearers could picture: a dharra, the tiniest young ant or a speck of dust in a sunbeam. The ayah sets the two images side by side. A spark of harm, the weight of a speck.
That is exactly how small wrongs work. They rarely stay the size they started. A small lie needs a second to protect it. A small resentment grows each time it is fed. A small cruelty teaches the one who does it that cruelty is possible, and makes the next one easier.
The sources explain 'he will see it' as seeing its recompense, or seeing the deed in the record. The honest implication is simple. The wrong you thought was too small to count has not disappeared. It has been weighed.
The family round the fire pit meant no harm. But they learned that night what the ayah teaches in one line. The size of a spark tells you nothing about the size of the fire.
