Al-Isra 17:104

“And We said after him [i.e., Pharaoh] to the Children of Israel, "Dwell in the land, and when there comes the promise [i.e., appointment] of the Hereafter, We will bring you forth in [one] gathering."”

Essence

The unsettled are told to settle, but the story is not over: on the Last Day, rescued and drowned will return as one crowd.

A reflection

Brought, from every tribe

The ayah ends with a verb that puts humanity in its place: jiʾnā bikum, We will bring you. Not 'you will come'. You will be brought, the way a shepherd brings in a flock at dusk.

And brought how? Lafīfā. The root pictures one thing wound round another: a turban wound round the head, branches grown into a thicket. A lafīf was a crowd gathered from many tribes, all mixed together. One early commentator describes the scene. People will come from their graves to the place of standing, mixed and pressed together. They will not recognise one another. No one will be able to withdraw to his own tribe or clan. Another compares them to locusts spreading out.

The Prophet ﷺ described how that crowd will be dressed, or rather not dressed. Sahih al-Bukhari records him saying: you will be gathered barefoot, naked and uncircumcised. Everything we wear to tell people who we are will be gone. The surname, the job title, the postcode, the badge on the car.

That is a hard picture for the ego, and it is meant to be. Much of our effort goes into standing apart from the crowd: a better school, a smarter address, a family name that opens doors. The ayah does not call those things wicked. It says they will not survive the journey. On that Day the only grouping that matters is the one Allah makes by what each person did.

Is it arrogant for Allah to speak of 'bringing' all of humanity like this? Arrogance is a creature claiming a height it does not have. Here the One who made every person in the crowd describes what He will do with what He made. He gains nothing from the gathering. He holds it so that every wrong can be answered, and every hidden good brought into the light.

So the next time you are tempted to introduce yourself by your rank, picture the crowd. Barefoot, mixed, unsorted by anything but deeds. Then introduce yourself the way you will be known there.
