Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 106 of 111
Al-Isra 17:106
وَقُرْءَانًا فَرَقْنَـٰهُ لِتَقْرَأَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ عَلَىٰ مُكْثٍ وَنَزَّلْنَـٰهُ تَنزِيلًا
“And [it is] a Qur’ān which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The Quran came in measured portions over years, so it could be recited to people unhurried, each passage arriving when its moment came.
A reflection
The answers were ready before the questions
Every planner knows the moment the plan meets the day. A man spends a week building a family calendar for Eid. Who collects Grandma, which house at noon, the photograph at four. By nine in the morning the baby has a fever, the car will not start, and the photograph never happens. We plan in pencil and call it ink.
One early authority, reciting this ayah, explained it in a sentence. Allah sent this Quran down part before part, because He knew what would come to be and what would happen among people. Another commentary says it came down according to events and needs.
Pause on what that means. For some twenty-three years, in one well-known reckoning, the Quran came in answer to life. A question was asked, and an answer came. A woman pleaded about her husband, and Allah heard her (58:1). None of this was improvised on His side. Every event of those years was known before the first ayah came down. The answer was ready before the question was born.
Set that beside our own planning. We cannot see the next nine hours of one festival morning. He saw two decades of a whole community's crises, joys, betrayals and victories. He placed each word at its exact hour.
That should shrink something in us. Pride loves the feeling of being in control. It drafts five-year plans and feels wise. The ayah does not mock planning. It simply sets our plans beside His, and lets the difference speak.
Is it boastful for Allah to describe His own timing? Boasting is claiming more than you have, to be thought more of. Allah claims exactly what is true, and our admiration adds nothing to Him, as the next ayah implies. The description is for us, so that we stop trusting our pencils.
There is comfort here as well as humility. The Knower who timed each ayah to its moment also times what reaches you. The hard thing that arrived this week did not arrive by accident. It came on a schedule you cannot see, written by One who knew it was coming before you were born.
So plan, and plan well. Then hold the plan loosely, ready to be answered from above at a time that is not yours.
