Maryam · Makki · ayah 54 of 98

Maryam 19:54

“And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.”

Essence

Ismaʿil is named for a virtue we usually call small manners: he was always where he said he would be.

A reflection

A small virtue, given as a title

Keeping promises sounds like something we teach children. Turn up when you said you would. Do what you said you would do. It feels like basic manners, a long way below the heights we expect a prophet to be praised for.

That is exactly why the ayah is worth slowing down for. Every prophet kept his word; the commentators say so plainly. Yet this one quality was chosen as Ismaʿil's title. They compare it to the titles given to others: the forbearing, the one who sighs often in prayer, the man of truth. Keeping his word was the trait Ismaʿil was best known for, so it became his name in the Book.

One commentary adds a detail of the structure. Ismaʿil is Ibrahim's son, and could easily have been folded into his father's portrait at 19:41. Instead the surah separates him and gives him his own wa-dhkur, his own mention. The separation itself is a mark of attention.

Now look at the roll-call as a whole. Ibrahim is ṣiddīq, a man of truth. His line is given lisāna ṣidqin, a true and lofty renown. Ismaʿil is ṣādiq al-waʿd, true to his promise. Idris is ṣiddīq. Four times in a few ayat the same root of truth, ṣ-d-q, defines these people. The roll-call is not a list of miracles. It is a list of men whose words and lives matched.

The lexicons give the root's first picture. A spear shaft called ṣadq was hard and sound, and did not snap when it was put to the test. Truth is named for that strength. A promise that is ṣādiq is one that holds when weight comes on it.

That should unsettle a familiar assumption. We tend to rank virtues by drama: courage in battle, endurance in exile. The Qur'an ranks this one among them. A person who says yes and means it is described in the same breath as the prophets. So is one who names a place and is found there.

It also means the virtue is within reach of anyone reading. Not everyone will face Pharaoh. Everyone will say, before the week is out, I'll be there.
