Al-Baqarah 2:130
“And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself. And We had chosen him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will be among the righteous.”

Essence
Only someone who makes a fool of his own self turns away from Ibrāhīm's way; Allah chose him here, and he is among the righteous hereafter.
A reflection
Proud of the grandfather, deaf to his prayer
A restaurant group hangs its founder's portrait in every branch. He started with one café and a rule: the staff eat before the customers do. His grandson, now chairman, praises him in every speech. Last year he quietly scrapped the rule to save money.
This ayah comes straight after Ibrāhīm's prayer for a messenger (2:129). Then it asks, almost in disbelief: 'Who would turn away from the way of Ibrāhīm?'
A major theologian explains the force of the question. Everyone around the Prophet ﷺ was proud of Ibrāhīm. The Jews traced their lineage to him through Isrāʾīl. The Christians traced ʿĪsā's lineage to Isrāʾīl through his mother. Quraysh owed their standing to the House he built. The Arabs of the north traced themselves to his son Ismāʿīl. In the end, he says, every group's pride went back to Ibrāhīm.
And yet Ibrāhīm had prayed, in tears and humility, for this very messenger. The theologian calls it astonishing. A person's greatest boast is his link to Ibrāhīm. And he rejects the one Ibrāhīm begged Allah to send.
It is easy to read this about others. It is harder to read it about ourselves. Many of us are proud of a heritage we do not live. We quote the scholars of our tradition and ignore what they taught. We claim the Prophet ﷺ and neglect his Sunnah. We name our children after the righteous and do not resemble them.
The ayah is a mirror. Pride in a great name is worthless if you have turned away from what made the name great. The grandson can keep the portrait. But the founder would not recognise his restaurants.
