Essence

With every door by which guidance enters shut, hearing, speech and sight, the ones whose fire went out cannot find their way back.

A reflection

Three doors, all shut

A classical reflection on this ayah offers a simple map of how guidance reaches anyone. It enters, it says, through three doors. There is what a person hears with his ears, what he sees with his eyes, and what he understands with his heart. The people of the fire parable had all three doors shut. Deaf, dumb and blind.

The concise commentaries make clear that this is not about the body. They were deaf to the truth, not hearing it with acceptance. They were dumb, never speaking the good. They were blind to the path of guidance, not seeing it. Their ears worked perfectly well. One commentary puts it simply: since they did not benefit from their hearing, sight and hearts, they were treated as people without them.

That is a searching picture for anyone. We can all hear without hearing. Picture a husband whose wife has told him for a year that she is lonely in the evenings. He hears every word. He even nods. But the sentence never goes through the door. It stays outside, a sound in the room. Only when she stops saying it does he realise that something has been shut.

Notice too the middle word, bukm, dumb. It seems odd in a list about receiving guidance. But speech is also a door. Saying the truth aloud, asking a question, confessing a fault, praying in words: these open the heart as well as express it. The hypocrites could speak fluently, but never the good. Their tongues worked only for excuses.

The Quran makes the same point elsewhere: it is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts within the breasts (22:46).

So it is worth checking the doors. Which of the three is most often shut in me? Is there something I keep hearing without letting in? Something I see every day without seeing? Something I know I should say, and never do?
