Al-Baqarah 2:215
“They ask you, [O Muḥammad], what they should spend. Say, "Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it."”

Essence
Asked what to give, the answer turns to whom: parents first, then kin, orphans, the poor and the stranded traveller.
A reflection
The giving no one counts
A son quietly pays his widowed mother's council tax every month. She thinks the council has forgotten her. He has never corrected her.
'Whatever good you do, Allah knows it well'. A classical commentator draws out the promise: whatever kindness comes from you, He knows it and will repay it in the fullest measure. He does not wrong anyone by the weight of an atom.
Notice who comes first in the list: parents. Giving to your own mother rarely feels like charity. No receipt, no appeal, no photograph. Much of the most important giving in a life is like this: invisible, expected, and uncounted by anyone else.
This is majesty that settles the ego's accounts. The ego wants its giving to be seen and its sacrifices remembered. It keeps a ledger of favours. The ayah answers that the ledger already exists, and it is not ours. 'Allah knows it', with a knowledge that misses nothing and forgets nothing.
Does He need our gifts, or our awareness of His knowing? No. He is free of all need (35:15). Our spending adds nothing to Him. His knowing is for our sake. It frees the giver from needing anyone else to notice.
The son paying the council tax will never be thanked by the person he is helping. He does not need to be. The One who counts has already counted.
