Al-Baqarah 2:21
“O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -”
Saheeh International
Essence
The first call to all humanity: worship the Lord who raised you and everyone before you from nothing, so that you may be guarded.
A reflection
Raised before you could say thank you
A man in his forties clears out his late mother's wardrobe and finds a shoebox. Inside is a tiny hospital bracelet with his name on it, a pair of first shoes, and a notebook. In her handwriting it records every feed and every weight for his first six months. He remembers none of it. He had spent years telling people he owed nothing to anyone.
This ayah is the Quran's first direct call to every human being: yā ayyuhā al-nās, O people. One classical reflection notes that it addresses all the children of Adam, with no one left out. And what it asks rests on a single word: 'worship your Rabb'. It does not say 'your God' here, but 'your Lord'. The same reflection explains why. The Rabb is the master and owner, the benefactor, the one who raises and sets right. He raised you with His favours before you knew His name. Nothing, it says, is more fitting to reason and nature than worshipping the One who does this.
Then: 'who created you'. A concise commentary adds: brought you into being when you were nothing. 'And those before you': your parents, your grandparents, every generation back to the first. No one shared in making any of them.
The ego prefers to believe it built itself. We keep accounts of what we have earned, and forget the notebook of feeds and weights we never saw. This ayah opens the shoebox. Before you did anything, you were made. Before you asked for anything, you were given.
Someone may ask why God commands worship at all. Does He need it? He says plainly that He wants no provision from His creatures (51:57), and that He is free of all need (35:15). The Prophet ﷺ once asked Muʿādh if he knew what Allah's right over His servants was. It is that they worship Him and associate nothing with Him. And their right over Allah is that He will not punish whoever associates nothing with Him (Sahih al-Bukhari). The call to worship comes with a promise attached.
