Al-Baqarah 2:243
“Have you not considered those who left their homes in many thousands, fearing death? Allāh said to them, "Die"; then He restored them to life. And Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of the people do not show gratitude.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Thousands fled death, died at one word from Allah and were given life again: no flight outruns Him, and His bounty deserves thanks.
A reflection
One word, and thousands fell as one
Somewhere, a very rich man is having a shelter built beneath his garden. Filtered air, two years of food, walls designed for any disaster. He has thought of everything except the one thing that cannot be kept out.
The ayah tells of thousands who left their homes, 'fearing death'. Then comes a sentence of startling economy: 'Allah said to them: Die'. A classical commentator notes why it is phrased as a command. It shows that they died the death of a single man, by His command and will. It was as though they were ordered and obeyed at once, without hesitation, like 'Be, and it is'. Then, just as briefly: 'then He gave them life'.
Two words decide everything. No army is mentioned, no plague described, no long process. Death and life are simply spoken.
This is the majesty that shrinks the ego most deeply. Our whole lives are quietly organised around postponing death: pensions, check-ups, seatbelts, savings. None of these is wrong. But the ego slips from prudence into the belief that we are the ones keeping ourselves alive. The ayah removes that illusion with one word.
The root of mawt pictures a fire whose embers have gone cold. The root of ḥayāh pictures rain on dead ground, and green shoots the next morning. Both pictures are in His hand.
Does Allah need us to know He commands life and death? He is free of all need (35:15). We need to know it, because only those who know who holds death can stop running from it, and start living.
