Al-Baqarah 2:252

تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِ نَتْلُوهَا عَلَيْكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

“These are the verses of Allāh which We recite to you, [O Muḥammad], in truth. And indeed, you are from among the messengers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

These stories are Allah's own signs, recited in truth to a Messenger who had read no books, and he is one of the sent.

A reflection

History told as His signs

When people tell history, they usually tell it as the story of people: heroes, villains, clever kings, foolish generals. The ayah that closes this sequence tells it differently. 'These are the signs of Allah, which We recite to you in truth'.

A classical commentator lists what 'these' include. His power to bring death in a moment on thousands who fled from it, and to revive them. Making a water-carrier or tanner king over the Children of Israel. Taking the kingdom from him when he disobeyed, and giving it to Dawud for his obedience. Giving the few victory over the many. In every scene, the real actor is Allah.

Another commentator notices the pronoun: 'We recite them'. The recitation reached the Prophet ﷺ through Jibrīl, yet Allah calls it His own. That is an honour to the messenger-angel, and a statement of whose words these are.

The root of natlūhā has a gentle picture: a weaned kid trotting close behind its mother. To recite is to follow the words, and then to follow where they lead.

The ego wants to be the hero of history, or at least of its own story. The ayah quietly reframes every story as His. Kings rise and fall; armies win and lose; but the signs belong to One.

Does He need us to read history this way? He is free of all need (35:15). We need it. A person who sees the signs in history stops being frightened of its villains and stops worshipping its heroes.
