Al-Baqarah 2:82

“But they who believe and do righteous deeds - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.”

Essence

Beside the warning stands the promise: those who believe and do what sets things right are the people of the Garden, for good.

A reflection

One small letter that is missing

Read the two ayat aloud, one after the other. The previous one says: 'fa-ulāʾika aṣḥābu n-nār', those are the companions of the Fire. This one says: 'ulāʾika aṣḥābu l-jannah', those are the companions of the Garden. The sentences are almost twins. But one has a small fa at the front, and the other does not.

A later commentator lingers over that missing letter and offers several explanations. Grammarians, he notes, observed a difference in sentences like these. 'Whoever enters my house, fa-I will honour him' links the honour to a condition that might fail. Without the fa, the honour is simply certain. So one reading is that mercy comes first, and the promise needs no hedge.

Another explanation he gives is gentler still. The people of the Fire are there because of what they did. The people of the Garden are there by Allah's grace and generosity. The fa of cause sits on the first sentence and not the second. He adds that faith and good deeds could never repay even the blessings a person has already received in this life.

That matches something the Prophet ﷺ said that surprised his Companions. 'No one's deeds will admit him into the Garden', he said. They asked whether that included him. 'Not even me, unless Allah covers me with His grace and mercy. So aim for what is right, and come as close as you can' (Sahih al-Bukhari).

This is a scholar's reading of a single letter, offered alongside others, not a settled rule. But it fits the whole of the Quran's picture. We do the deeds. We do not buy the Garden with them. They are how we reach towards a door that only grace opens.

There is great relief in that. You are not keeping a ledger good enough to pay for Paradise. No one could. You are aiming and drawing near, and the rest is mercy.
