Taha 20:36

قَالَ قَدْ أُوتِيتَ سُؤْلَكَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

“[Allāh] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Eight requests, one reply, and his own name at the end of it: you have been given what you asked, Musa.

A reflection

Granted now, delivered over time

A woman has waited four years on the housing list. One March morning a letter arrives: a flat has been allocated to her. The keys will not come until June. The repairs are not finished; the paperwork is still moving. But she reads the letter twice and puts it on the fridge. In every way that matters, the flat is hers.

Allah's answer to Musa has that shape. Qad ūtīta suʾlaka: you have been given your request. The particle qad with a past tense makes it settled, done. Yet some of what Musa asked for had not happened yet. His task was not yet eased; he had not yet faced Pharaoh. His brother was in Egypt and had not yet joined him.

One commentator resolves this carefully. 'Given', he says, means that Allah's will had fixed every one of those requests, decreeing them with certainty. They were all Musa's from that moment, even though some would only unfold later. That is why another surah can say, in the future tense, We will strengthen your arm through your brother (28:35). Granted at the bush; delivered on the road.

The word for 'given' carries its own picture. The lexicons say the root is coming with ease: a torrent running in its course, a channel carrying water to the pool. Form IV makes a thing come to you. Musa's requests were now in the channel. They would arrive.

Many of us live in the gap between the letter and the keys. We have prayed. Something in us knows the prayer was heard. But the visible answer has not yet come, and the gap is hard.

Musa's story suggests a way to hold that gap. Read the letter twice. Put it where you can see it. Then get up and walk towards Pharaoh, trusting that what was decreed at the bush will meet you on the road.
