Taha 20:85
قَالَ فَإِنَّا قَدْ فَتَنَّا قَوْمَكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِكَ وَأَضَلَّهُمُ ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ
“[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī[847] has led them astray."”
Saheeh International
Essence
On the Mount, Musa learns what happened in the valley: his people were tested the moment he left, and an insider led them astray.
A reflection
He knew what was happening in the valley
Musa was standing on the Mount, in the most intimate meeting of his life. He believed his people were close behind him. Then he was told: We have tested your people after you left.
He did not know. He could not have known. The valley was out of sight. Only the One speaking to him could see both places at once: the prophet on the mountain, and the crowd gathering ornaments below.
A rhetorical commentary notices a puzzle in the timing. According to the reports, the calf came some days after Musa left. Yet Allah tells him as soon as he arrives. One answer it gives is that Allah speaks of a trial still to come as though it had already happened, as is His way. Another is that al-Sāmirī had seized on Musa's absence and begun his plan the moment he left. Either way, Allah's knowledge was ahead of events, not behind them.
This is humbling for anyone who leads, parents or manages. We like to believe that things hold together because of us. That our presence keeps people safe, our absence is only a pause, and our plans cover the gaps. The ayah gently dismantles that pride. Musa was the greatest leader of his age, and he did not know what was happening a short walk away.
Picture a mother on her first night away from her children in years. She has left lists, numbers and instructions. She lies in a hotel room picturing her house exactly as she left it. In fact, the toddler has a fever and her husband is pacing the landing. She is not to blame. She is simply not all-seeing.
No one is, except One. The ego wants to be the guardian of outcomes. The ayah hands that role back to its owner. We have tested. The trials are His, the knowledge is His, and so, in the end, is the care.
