Al-Hajj 22:35

“Who, when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts are fearful, and [to] the patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.”

Essence

The humble carry four marks: a heart stirred at Allah's name, patience under what strikes, prayer set upright, and spending from His provision.

A reflection

Four marks, read together

An old horse dealer will not trust an animal on one good sign. He checks the eyes for clearness, the legs for soundness, the wind for stamina and the temper for trust. A horse can have bright eyes and bad legs. Only the four together tell him what he is buying.

The previous ayah promised good news to the humble, the mukhbitūn. This ayah tells us who they are. One commentator said the best explanation of 'the humble' is simply this ayah that follows. It gives four marks.

A theologian among the commentators reads them as a single movement, from the inside out. It begins in the heart: when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble. That inner stirring then bears two kinds of fruit. The first is patience over what is hard. The second is service with the two things a person holds dearest: the self, given in prayer, and wealth, given in spending.

So the portrait moves outwards in rings. Heart, then endurance, then body, then hand. Nothing in it is merely private, and nothing is merely outward.

This matters because each mark, alone, can be faked or misread. A soft voice can hide pride. A regular prayer can hide a hard heart. A large donation can be vanity in a good suit. Even tears can be a performance. But picture someone who trembles at His name and holds steady when struck. He keeps the prayer upright and lets money leave his hand. That is hard to counterfeit.

It also stops us shrinking humility into one trait. Many think of the humble as merely quiet or modest in manner. The Quran's humble person is far fuller: alive inside, steady under weight, disciplined in worship, open-handed with others.

Try the dealer's test on yourself, gently. Which of the four is strong in you? Which one is limping? The good news of the previous ayah was promised to the whole animal, not to one bright eye.
