Al-An'am 6:121
“And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allāh has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him].[341]”

Essence
Behind a quarrel about meat lies the real question: whose voice decides what is right for you, His or the one whispering in your ear?
A reflection
When the podcaster and the Quran disagree
A woman listens to a popular podcast on her commute every morning. She loves its warmth and good sense. One day she notices something. When the podcaster and the Quran disagree, she quietly sides with the podcaster. She has never said so aloud, even to herself.
The ayah ends with a startling sentence. If you obey them, you are associators. Mushrikūn: those who set up partners with Allah. Over a dispute about food?
The commentaries explain the weight of it. The argument had been about meat that died by itself. But the real issue was authority. One classical commentator puts it plainly. If you turn from Allah's command to someone else's word, and put that word first, this is shirk. One translation adds a footnote: obedience is the basis of worship.
The same commentator links this to another ayah. They took their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah (9:31). Al-Tirmidhi records that Adi ibn Hatim objected that they never worshipped them. The reply came: they made things lawful and unlawful for them, and they followed. That was their worship. Al-Tirmidhi himself called this report gharīb; it has been graded ḥasan, while another grading considers it weaker.
Many people think shirk means bowing before a statue. This ayah shows a quieter form. It is handing to someone else the right that belongs to Allah: to say what is good and what is not.
That someone need not be a priest. It can be a culture, a feed, a family, or a charming voice in your earbuds. The question is not whether you listen to others. It is who wins when they disagree with Him.
The woman on the train has not stopped believing. But the ayah asks her to notice where her obedience has drifted.
